This looks like a great competition, although with people like Ian around, I probably have no chance. I might give it a whirl....

"1,000 short story competition about the future of the human race, open to
non-professional writers or video producers.

The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Commerce and Manufactures)
is offering 1,000 for the best short story, in either written or multi-media
format.

The subject should address how scientific advances such as cloning and stem cell
research are pushing against our traditional beliefs about nature and what it
means to be human. Can we imagine a world where people are able to choose from a
menu of 'enhancing' techniques - IQ, strength, disease prevention, age extension,
among others? What would life be like in such a world? What ethical dilemmas
might it raise?

The closing date for entries is 30 June 2007. The winner will be presented with
1,000 at an Ethical Futures conference in November, 2007, at the RSA, 8 John
Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ.

The judges of the Ethical Futures short story competition are Justina Robson, who
Zadie Smith described as a 'novelist of real vision', wrote the popular Quantum
Gravity: Keeping it Real series. Dr Anjana Ahuja, Science Notebook columnist for
The Times, Cory Doctorow, a science fiction novelist, and contributor to Wired,
Popular Science, Make, and the New York Times. In 2007, Entertainment Weekly
called him, "The William Gibson of his generation." He was also named one of
Forbes Magazine's 2007 Web Celebrities, and one of the World Economic Forum's
Young Global Leaders for 2007.

Short stories should be sent to mailto:Sandra.Wint@rsa.org.uk by 30 June 2007.

Be sure to let us have a look at what you come up with, Jen.

What do you think the effect of stem cell research and cloning will be on humanity?

Seriously - I wish I had the time to think about this and have a go at the moment.

You might have time to write the story, if you spend less time wow-ing us with your photoshp skills and humour but then we would suffer.

I've always felt human cloning was eery, ever since I saw a tv drama featuring 3 ginger women.

Not sure, just something I remember watching when I was younger. It may have featured someone like Emilia Fox (surreal eyes) with red hair and she had 2 identical sisters. I still think identical twins are scary looking. And there was a lake and it featured a sinister plot about human cloning.

I think I'll try having a go at this.
Not that I'd stand a chance mind you.

Well, 1,000 words isn't much so it wouldn't be too big an investment of time.

I don't really know anything about stem cell research. Is this the one where they say we'll be able to pick and choose certain physical characteristics for our offspring?

It's actually 1000 prize and a maximum of 2000 words. I have written something basic. It's nothing to do with human cloning but it is about the evolution of the human race. Only 200 words at the mo, so more like a poem than a short story. I have a question, where do you put semi-colons? I cannot remember. I have many sentences that are like 2 sentences in one. Do I use semi-colons or commas? Some examples of use would be appreciated. Thanks....

Quote:
"The semi-colon is often used to join together two independent clauses -- in other words, it joins two clauses that could be sentences."

Ahh, seems I had the right idea!
