Interesting stuff. I was already aware of the risks of identity theft, it's common sense. I have purposely omitted my date of birth and other specific personal details for this reason but I thought facebook was probably safer than other websites because only people who you have allowed to become your friend can view your profile, unlike sites like Myspace, where every Tom, Dick and Harry can have a read. But the information about the investors backgrounds and the suggestion that fb could be used to collect personal data on every individual citizen is disturbing...

I know it's a bit of a risk so I don't put everything down but you've got to sensibly assess the risks against the benefits as in everything. At the moment, it's benefitting me quite a bit...Wink

touch wood - yes - I have a mahogany keyboard inlayed with mdf

I'm quite paranoid about online security.
Offline, I've had a debit card cloned and a case of id theft of my name at a previous address.
Online, I never include my address or DOB. I realise it's not so easy if you are hoping to find work through online contact.
I think there's some alarmist talk atm about MySpurts and Facebook but they are no more secure than anyother part of t' interweb.

In a related way, I use and recommend the following software-

FireFox
AVG anti virus
Zone Alarm Firewall
Lavasoft Adaware
Snoop Free anti keylogger

They're all free - because I'm cheap...

There's nothing wrong with being a cautious bunny, but at the same time I specifically try to avoid getting caught up with fears (I'm sure it's people who are afraid of bad things happening to them that cop the worst of it in life).

I sometimes wonder what it might be like if somebody gained control of my affairs through the internet. My ultimate backup plan would be to just switch the computer off and think of myself as a physical being in a physical world, leave cyberspace to it's own devices. I guess that's quite easy for me to say, not owning my own home any more, or having much money to speak of. But who knows: maybe one day within our lifetime all the virtual stuff (like money and identity) may disappear anyway Smile

Crumbs, what would that world look like?

I understand what you mean, the hype of the news and media coverage etc. Particularly the US and its culture of fear that makes citizens go out and purchase shot-guns, that accidentally go off in homes and kill the neighbours' children. Focus on the fear, and you generate chaos and panic. However, I can't help being a sucker for conspiracy theories sometimes, particularly since I'm an idealist. I still reckon 9/11 was an inside job.

Okay enough of the fear, let's have more laughter. I'm hooked on this song, just love the kid with the gap teeth...
